Attitude is not a phase that kids go through. Nor are they born with certain attitude traits. Attitude is a choice of behavior. It starts as a developmental component of your behavior. It is a learned behavior. It says who you are. It determines who you will be. It is important because it is the centerpiece of your personality.

Attitude is developed over time. Simply explained, your attitude is strongly influenced by those around you. Younger kids, under the age of seven, adopt habits and behaviors from parents and later from their friends. As the saying goes, “you are judged by the company you keep”. In the company of positive people, you develop a healthy and positive attitude. The same person raised in an environment where shouting, swearing and disrespect is prevalent, will adopt these as norms in their behavior. You are a product of your environment.

There is nothing worse than a person with bad attitude.

You want to succeed in life? Look at your environment. Evaluate your friends, objectively, to see how they influence you. This is often difficult because… well they are your friends. But if you are a serious young person wanting to get ahead in life, look around you with a critical eye. If you dont like what you see, change things. You can’t change your parents or siblings but you can change the way you deal with them. Same for your friends, except you CAN change them. You can even move into a new environment. Not necessarily moving out of the town where you live, but changing the places you frequent.

Cultivate an attitude that works for you. Determine things you want to avoid like being around lazy people or people who do not have ambition. If you care about certain friends, try to influence them. Talk to them seriously about how you can work together on developing healtier attitudes. Move on to things that interest you, things that have some value, especially in the long run. Connect with people who are doing great things. And have fun doing so. You will see a change of attitude in others towards you!

Be the best you can! It’s all in your attitude!
