Street smart kids first and foremost know how to be vigilant. They are alert and observe what’s going on around them. They are able to size up a situation quickly and decide what would be the right thing to do and they act.

But how do kids develop street smarts? It is a learned behavior. Starting with young preschool children, parents can teach them how to grow up street smart . Without making them paranoid about everything around them, parents should talk to them about how to pick up on ‘unusual’ things happening around them. Apart from the simple things like not accepting a ride from strangers, they can easily be taught how to get help and who to get it from, if the occasion calls for it.

Older kids can also be vulnerable if they are not alert to what’s happening around them. From drug peddlers on the street to email and website lures in cyberspace, there are things to be vigilant about.

Be street smart. Be always aware! Know when to act and when to confront the situation. And above all, know when to get help!
