School bullies get respect by forcing others to following their dictates through fear and intimidation. Following the orders of a policewoman shows respect for the law. But the most common way of getting respect comes from our relations with people around us. Respect is earned not demanded or legislated.

It takes a certain type of character to achieve respect. The best examples come from leaders. Develop your self-esteem. Here are some tips to develop a healthy sense of respect from others.

  • - Treat others with respect. You will get respect from others if you treat them with respect.
  • - Demonstrate through example. Be a role model.
  • - Treat others fairly and equally. Avoid prejudice and bias when dealing with people.
  • - Develop a sense of loyalty. Others will be loyal if you demonstrate your loyalty. Stick to your word. Act responsibly. If you are wrong, be big enough to own up to your mistakes and move on.
  • - Remain committed. Stick to your principles. Speak up. Voice your opinion. Remain focused on your goals.
  • Listen to others as if you are in their shoes. Good listening means you feel what the other person is saying. Feeling goes to the heart of the person. Strive to really understand the other person before you respond. Show true empathy.
  • Celebrate differences. We are not all equal. Some of us are less well endowed than others. Look for the good in others.
  • Always be truthful. Avoid duplicity, saying one thing and doing the opposite.
  • Develop a sense of worth. Make the other person really feel important and worthy of attention.
  • Stand up for what’s right. Know when to say ‘No’ . Even though it may be against yourself or your family. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Never confuse the two.

Respect is something you earn. No one gives you respect unless you earn it. Bullies may earn respect by force. It usually does not last long. You can earn the respect and admiration of others by what you accomplish for yourself. It’s something you usually have to work on. Persistence pays off!
