An abusive relationship between two young people can remain concealed for long periods of time and for many reasons. It can be physical, verbal or psychological, or a combination of these. The abuser and victim can be male or female. Here are some tell tale signs of an abusive relationship :

  • angry name calling
  • jealousy
  • covering up for the abuser
  • frequently checking on the partner
  • display of temper or disrespect
  • low self-esteem
  • fear of upsetting the partner
  • dramatic change in behaviour
  • injuries that are easily explained away
  • dramatic decline of grades
  • sudden weight loss

Often there are multiple signs. The victim seldom wants anyone to interfere. He or she is afraid to speak up.

Before things get to difficult, better be safe than sorry! The best way to deal with the situation if you notice any of these in your friends, is to talk to an adult (parent, teacher or counselor).
